Meeting people in Bangkok

Bangkok dating apps, ranked by how much Reddit complains about them

Every “best dating apps in Thailand” guide on the first page of Google gets paid when you sign up. We read 12,000 Reddit comments from people who didn’t.

Bar chart of Bangkok dating apps by the share of Reddit comments that complain about them, ThaiFriendly highest at 74 percent and Omi lowest at zero
Share of comments on r/Bangkok and r/Thailand that criticise each app, out of every comment that took a view. Red is more than half.

Search for the best dating apps in Thailand and you get ten guides that agree with each other. ThaiFriendly is “the best choice for 90% of people”, says one whose sign-up links carry a ThaiFriendly tracking code. Another, which at least admits some of its links pay commission, puts it top as well. ThaiCupid, which also pays referrers, is never far behind.

Reddit disagrees. We went through every thread on r/Bangkok, r/Thailand and r/ThailandTourism that names a dating app, about 12,000 comments going back to 2012, and counted who recommended each app and who warned you off it. Nobody is paying anyone there. The results are below. Spoiler: the app the guides love most is the one Reddit hates most, and the gap is not close.

Counted from 1,192 mentions in 207 threads, read in October 2026. “Mentions” includes comments that only name the app in passing; the share is worked out from the ones that took a side. Quotes are verbatim, upvotes as of 22 October 2026.

ThaiFriendly: the guides’ favourite, 74% complaints

The affiliate guides describe a site with two million members, a generous free tier and a warm Thai welcome. Reddit describes something else. “Thaifriendly is 90% Sex for money” (51 upvotes). “TF has become the country’s primary ‘go to’ app for westerners to source sex workers” (33). When a man posted that his girlfriend of several months turned out to be a freelancer, a reply with 133 upvotes was “Lol dude goes on Thaifriendly to find a genuine girl. This can’t be real.”

Reddit uses the name as a unit of measurement. A man looking for a cheap flat asked for somewhere “decent enough to not feel embarrassed bringing a ThaiFriendly date over”, and was told that “if Thaifriendly is the threshold, then you might even go for the run down apartments near the port”. Pattaya threads quote it by the hour, next to Beach Road.

The praise exists, and it is mostly men who met their wives on it. “I actually met my wife on ThaiFriendly over ten years ago and we’re now happily married with kids” got 64 upvotes. Ten years ago is the operative phrase. Of the people who took a view since 2024, 78% were warning you off. The most honest endorsement we found was “Thaifriendly does work for casual dating. But depending on how you look to be completely honest.”

Hinge: 67% complaints, from the twelve people who have opened it

Hinge is the relationship app in every guide, “designed to be deleted”, prompts instead of swiping. In Bangkok it has been deleted before anyone installed it. Someone asked in March 2026 why everyone on Hinge in Bangkok and Pattaya was white, and the top answer was “Hinge is not available in Thailand.” The other answers were “Hinge is a western centric app, no one in Thailand uses it” and “wtf is hinge lol”. The only person who claimed success had “matched with tons of girls on hinge and bumble” and was asking whether ladyboys usually tell you.

Six of Hinge’s 23 Reddit mentions turned out to be about door hinges. They did not get a vote. They were more positive.

Tinder: 62% complaints, 576 mentions, every scam in the city

Tinder is where everyone is, which is the problem. Students, tourists, expats, freelancers and the people who run the bar scams all share one pool, and Reddit has met all of them. The scams have their own threads: the match who asks you to pay her Bolt fare and never arrives (142 upvotes on the warning), the Russian match who insists on a karaoke bar where a cocktail is 700 baht and the glass of Blue Label she wanted was over 2,000 (276 upvotes, September 2026), the ones who want a nightclub table on your card (132 upvotes on the reply explaining why). “She’s a worker for the bar. Get off Tinder in Bangkok or prepare to be robbed, drugged or worse” is a real reply from this September.

The class note came from a Thai commenter in October 2026, with 41 upvotes: “Pretty Thai Hiso girls are not on Tinder. Tinder is considered a low class app. Im thai.” The men’s complaint is newer. “On Tinder I’m only getting about three likes per day whereas in the past it wasn’t uncommon to get maybe 30 per day,” wrote one in February, blaming the passport bros. “About 50% of my matches do not even reply,” wrote another.

And yet. “I’ve been with my current partner for a couple years now. We met via Tinder in BKK. It’s not hard” (21 upvotes). The survivors give the same advice: stay out of the tourist zones, pay for Gold so you choose from the people who liked you, and swipe left on anyone whose bio does not mention a job. “Tinder for quantity, Bumble for quality” (29 upvotes) is the house view.

Grindr, Badoo and Tantan: the middle of the table

Grindr splits Reddit down the middle. Half the mentions are one word in a “best app?” thread; the other half are a July 2025 scam-and-threats thread and a Thai ladyboy noting that “nowadays, many freelancers are on Grindr.” The same commenter met “many guys and friends from that app”, so make of that what you will. Thai gay men, according to the one reply that mentioned it, are on Hornet: “Thai gays always use Hornet. This app is popular in Thailand.” Foreigners never bring it up.

When a woman asked which app works in Thailand for women looking to meet women, the top reply, five upvotes, was “I hear Grindr is great”. The one real answer, one upvote, was “Tinder. Bumble. Coffee meets bagel.” Her and Feeld got no useful mention anywhere in 12,000 comments.

Badoo has nine mentions, one wedding and one “filled with mostly ladyboys, hookers and ugly people”. Tantan is the Chinese app: “Almost everyone on it in Thailand are Chinese tourists. Few will speak English.” Two people say it works if you are young and speak Chinese. One of the best-voted posts in the whole set, an Asian expat woman asking where Asian women meet Asian men in Bangkok, dealt with it in four words: “TanTan is just bad.”

Bumble: 34% complaints, and the complaints are from women

Bumble is the app Reddit would pick if it had to pick one. Ninety-five recommendations against 48 complaints, and the recommendations are specific: “Met the wife on bumble but that was 5 years ago”, “within a few months I’m in a relationship”, “The women I have met on there have tended to be university graduates with their own jobs”, and from a man three years in, “not once has she been short on her electric bill, had a sick buffalo”.

The complaints come from the other side of the match. A 33-year-old Thai woman using Bumble and Coffee Meets Bagel to find a partner wrote the best-voted post on the subject (144 upvotes): “Many profiles in my dating pool have no bio at all”, “I also see a lot of short-term visitors”, and “Some people ask to meet up right away after just a couple of messages like ‘Hi’ and ‘How are you?’”. An Asian expat woman found “the majority of profiles I come across are Western/Caucasian men” (92 upvotes). The men’s complaint, in full: “only 20% people will reply, is hard to Bumble”.

Bumble BFF, the friends mode, gets a cautious thumbs up for a night out with strangers, with one caveat from a man who used it: “I get messages from a lot of gay guys who use the BFF feature for some reason.”

ThaiCupid and OkCupid: the apps your uncle met his wife on

ThaiCupid costs money and is slow, and Reddit counts both as features. “Try websites where there is a membership subscription like Thai Cupid. Those sites tend to have more serious people” (27 upvotes). “It was pretty normal dating,” said another, which around here counts as a rave. The complaint is who else is paying: “thaicupid are looking for long-term men to marry for money”, and a 2022 comment that put both Thai sites down as “for lower class Thai women & older guys 40+ who mostly don’t even live in Thailand”.

OkCupid has 21 mentions and four marriages, the best ratio on the board. “I met my Thai wife of 7 years on OK Cupid. She was too good to be true, and still is.” The one complaint is a classic: “the last 2 women I met on there wanted to sell me a condo, what gives?”

Coffee Meets Bagel and Omi: the two nobody complains about, because nobody is on them

Coffee Meets Bagel has 23 recommendations, three complaints and one description that keeps coming back: “girls with higher education, good English and with an actual career”. The catch is in the next breath: “much better but unfortunately not super popular”. One user found it “buggy, slow”. It is the app people suggest to anyone who says the word “relationship” out loud.

Omi is the Thai-built app that every Thai listicle puts near the top and every English guide has never heard of. Reddit’s most useful comment on the whole subject, 14 upvotes, is a map of who is where:

Educated professionals who speak English: Bumble
Regular girls: Omi (pretty much need to speak Thai)
Mixture (regular/tourist/prostitutes): Tinder and TanTan
“Adult”: ThaiFriendly and other apps that focus of Thai/Foreigner relationships

Zero complaints about Omi in eight mentions, one of which is “Wtf is omi”. One user said it “feels more authentic and less prone to catfishing compared to other apps”. You will need Thai.

The scams, so you recognise them

Across every app the same five come up. She asks you to pay her Bolt or Grab fare in advance and never arrives. She picks the bar, and the bar prices a cocktail at 700 baht. She wants to go to a club, the club wants a table, and the table is on your card. Within three messages there is an investment, usually crypto, usually with a screenshot of her returns. And on LINE and X, where the “sideline girl” sellers moved after the websites were shut down, “they want your deposit upfront and never show up”. One Bumble match cost a visitor 44,000 baht on a condo sublease that did not exist. Facebook Dating is free, which one commenter counted as its main safety feature: “Not safe anywhere but Facebook dating is free.”

Or go and meet someone with a face

The 12,000 comments keep circling back to one piece of advice. The best-voted dating advice on r/Bangkok this month, 80 upvotes, came from a Chulalongkorn graduate: “I’ve tried using Tinder and Bumble, but I think meeting people organically through work, hobbies, or friends is much better.” Even Tinder agrees: its Thai operation now runs swing dance nights, badminton and a Halloween run club, because apparently the way to meet people on Tinder is to leave the house.

We keep a calendar of singles events and speed dating in Bangkok: the speed-dating nights at the W, the monthly singles night at Tony’s on Soi 11, the Thai slow-dating rounds in Ekkamai, a singles night market on Banthat Thong, and yes, Tinder’s Halloween run. Every entry has the date, the price, the venue and who it is for, and none of them has a tracking code in the link.
