Living in Thailand

You know you've lived in Thailand when...

Score one point for each. Forty of them, from the first week to the point of no return. Tick the ones that are you and we will tell you how long you have really been here.

You know you've lived in Thailand when... Score one point for each. A Bangkok Comedy card.

Everyone who moves here goes through the same stages. Week one you photograph a 7-Eleven. Month three you have opinions about which 7-Eleven. Year three you are at a farewell party for someone who will still be here next year, and so will you. Below are 40 signs. Tick the ones that have happened to you. One point each, no half marks, and nobody is checking.

What the scores mean

  • Tourist (0 to 5 out of 40). Welcome to Thailand. Your Grab has been cancelled.
  • Settling in (6 to 14 out of 40). You have a favourite 7-Eleven and a visa you do not fully understand.
  • Resident (15 to 24 out of 40). You have been to a farewell party and outlasted the person leaving.
  • Lifer (25 to 34 out of 40). You stopped converting the prices years ago. People back home have stopped asking when you are coming back.
  • Never leaving (35 to 40 out of 40). Someone should check your visa, your liver and your 90-day report.

Then come out

Whatever you scored, the people who wrote these are on stage most nights of the week. Tonight's comedy shows are on the front page, the singles nights are on their own calendar, and if you have a line we missed, send it in and we will add it, with the point.
